Some Thoughts on Psychiatric Meds

Hey friends, wanted to talk briefly about psychiatric meds and share some things I’ve learned along the way.

1. Medicines can be supportive. They aren’t magic. They aren’t everything. But they can be a wonderful supportive piece of the healing puzzle. They can provide relief to a brain that’s gotten off track.

2. Medicines aren’t forever. And they aren’t all or nothing. When I was first diagnosed with bipolar disorder in my early twenties the docs told me I’d have to take lithium for life. I didn’t. I was on it for years. Then off it for years. Then on it again.

3. Medicines need experimentation. You have to try something. Then be open to trying more. Or trying less. Or trying something else. You have to take notes. You have to take a meta perspective about yourself as the patient, and yourself as the researcher, and then use that data to guide yourself as the healer. You have to wear a lot of hats sometimes.
